Last Falls and Sweet Thing on Slickum

Two lessor known South Carolina waterfalls that are not far from the road and relatively easy to reach.

On the Southern Edge of South Carolina’s Mountain Bridge Wilderness Area, just off Highway 11, are two hidden waterfall gems on Slickum Creek – Last Falls on Slickum and Sweet Thing on Slickum. These two beauties are very close to the road and generally easy to reach. However, they are somewhat unknown and not too popular. This is partly due to the fact that there is no signage or indication of the falls or the trail on the road. Most people drive right by after visiting Wildcat Wayside, which is just 3/10’s of a mile up the highway, and have no idea these two waterfalls are just beyond the trees.

Last Falls and Sweet Thing are located on South Carolina’s Highway 11 between the parking area for Wildcat Wayside and the turn off to Caesars Head State Park on Highway 276. It is literally right in the middle between these two points. There are no signs or parking areas to look for. You have to look for Slickum Creek as it comes down the mountain and goes under the highway right before entering the Saluda River. Since there isn’t a parking area, you will need to pull safely off the highway and park on the shoulder of Highway 11. You could also park at the parking area for Wildcat Wayside and walk the 3/10’s of a mile to the trailhead. Either way, be safe as you park and work your way to the trailhead. The falls on Slickum Creek are about 30 minutes from Greenville South Carolina. There are no restroom facilities at the trailhead.

The trailhead to the falls starts just to the west of Slickum Creek. It is unmarked but should be easy to spot as it enters the forest. Very quickly you will be at Last Falls on Slickum which is only about 100ft from the road. This is a short multi tiered cascade that flows into a sandy pool. It isn’t too high, less than 10ft, but it a nice waterfall for the amount of effort required to reach it. Even though you are still very close to the road, this is a very beautiful area where you will want to hang out and relax for a bit.

To reach Sweet Thing on Slickum, continue on the trail as it follows the creek upstream. The trail will be more difficult from here but is only about a tenth of a mile further up Slickum Creek. The trail can be also overgrown at times since it doesn’t receive too much traffic. Take your time and before you know it you will be at Sweet Thing on Slickum.

Sweet Thing is about 15ft high and truly lives up to its name. It really is a sweet thing. The trail will put you above Slickum Creek where you will get a good view of the falls. There is also a steep incline down to the river that provides a better view of the falls. If you choose to go down to the creek, be safe as the slope is usually muddy and slippery.

Wherever you choose to view the falls, you are going to really enjoy this sweet thing on Slickum Creek.

This is an out and back hike so hike safely back to the highway when you have finished enjoying the falls.
