Deep inside the Sumter National Forest in Oconee County, is the spectacular King Creek Falls. This 70 foot beauty is only 1/2 mile from the road via an easily hiked and well marked trail that is great for all ages. It is also located in an area rich with other sites to see like the Chattooga River or Spoonauger Falls.

The Sumter National Forest is one of only two national forests in the State of South Carolina. It consists of over 370,000 acres via several non-contiguous sections in Western South Carolina, North Carolina, and Georgia. It is the home to a number of rivers and waterfalls supporting activities like hiking, backpacking, canoeing, horseback riding, camping and fishing.

The trailhead to King Creek Falls is located along Burrells Ford Road near Mountain Rest South Carolina. Burrells Ford Road is a small forest road off of SC Highway 107 that quickly turns to a dirt road as you travel back to the Burrells Ford Campground Parking Lot where the trailhead is located. Note that during our trip, the road sign for Burrells Ford Road was missing from the post. So if you see a pole with just F-708 on it, this is where you turn.

The parking area is large and even has restroom facilities. There is also an informational sign board present which is where the trail for King Creek Falls starts.

The Sumter National Forest is thick and lush with vegetation. However, the trail is well maintained, marked and easily followed as you walk towards and then parallel King Creek up to the falls. The hike is a wonderful and almost effortless trek through a forest filled with beautiful hardwoods, rhododendron and mountain laurel but the highlight of this hike is the 70ft picture perfect King Creek Falls at the end of the trail.

King Creek Falls is as close to perfect as you can get with a waterfall. The size and structure of it is exactly what you would imagine a forest waterfall to be, the sandy pool at the bottom of the falls is perfect for cooling off your feet on a warm Carolina summer day, and the small beach off to the side calls you to sit down and relax while you enjoy the sights and sounds of King Creek Falls.

This is an out and back trail so when you are finishing enjoying the falls, hike back the trail to the parking lot.
